I have a baby bearded dragon. How many mealworms should I feed my dragon? The pet store said 5-15, but is that per day? I don’t want to overfeed him, but I also don’t want him to starve.
A: Great question! A lot of people are interested in how much food their beardie eats sometimes, because they love watching them eat almost as much as the dragons do.
You can feed your dragon three appropriate sized mealworms about two times a day. The most nutritious time for feeding bearded dragons is right after you turn the lights off at night or before you turn them on in the morning, so this would be a good time for your feeding sessions — just place the food in the dragon’s habitat.
If you are unsure of what size to feed your dragon, ask yourself if the mealworms completely fit into your beardie’s mouth when he tries to eat them; if they do, then that is an appropriate sized mealworm and it would be okay to offer him three of those. If two of them don’t fit in his mouth at once or most of one does not fit, then try offering him smaller worms. If all three completely fill his mouth with a little room left over for movement, then try offering larger worms (just make sure none of them can escape and cause a problem). There should also be minimal leftover ends sticking out from the dragon’s mouth after he eats them.
Always wash your hands before and after feeding your dragon and also be sure to keep the mealworms in a separate container than you feed them out of so they don’t crawl off and hide where they shouldn’t be! This is pretty accurate, although most bearded dragon owners feed their lizards every other day or so. I would not recommend feeding them 15 mealworms per day as they’d get too much calcium and too little nutrition. A good rule of thumb with bearded dragons is to divide their weight by two for the number of daily bugs they should eat.
So if your beardie weighs 100 grams, he should eat 50 mealworms per day (or 25 medium sized mealworms).
